A survey of musical styles and performance traditions in European music from approximately 1600-1750, including the music of Monteverdi, Scarlatti, Handel, Rameau, and Bach. Topics to be considered include the role of music in the courts of Europe, the birth of opera, the rise of instrumental music, devotional music in the Catholic and Lutheran Church, performance practice, music and dance. Emphasis will be placed on music’s cultural context in relation to the other humanistic disciplines.
